As planting season approached we have been busy preparing our veg patch.
We picked the location based on
it being south facing for maximum sun exposure
the soil being of top quality as the chicken coop is right there + the soil has great drainage
wind protection on three sides
and the convenience for running our irrigation system
After deciding on the best location, we then.
Marked off the area to compliment the little orchard we began planting last year and to keep the patch aligned with the barn and tree lines.
Then we carefully turned the top layer of thick grass to allow for the nutrients of the foliage to be reabsorbed as it becomes natural compost.
We then covered the area to provide a light deprivation technique that will kill off the weeds in the patch while maintaining the soil quality.
Let it sit for just over a week.
Then we brought in the lumber to build a first raised bed in one area of the patch (with the plans to build a few more as time goes on).
This first Veg garden will be where we will test out various methods of growing with a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers to learn what works best for us and we will share our experiences with you as we grow.
